The theoretical framework of this master’s dissertation summarizes the definitions of the term “picture book” written by Slovene and foreign theorists. The Slovene picture book is described from different perspectives, among which are: different comprehension levels, types according to creative procedures, source of text, new visual and functional possibilities in a picture book. The following paratextual elements, that in combination with the text and illustration form a whole of a picture book, are defined: format, title, front cover, inside front cover, endpapers and rear cover. Furthermore, the theoretical framework describes the development of a Slovene illustration and picture book. It includes also a chapter about a contemporary fairy tale and a chapter that describes the “Original Slovene Picture Book Award” that is given annually since 2004 by the Chamber of Publishing, Bookselling, Graphic Industry, Radio and TV Media (GZS-ZKGM). The focus of the empirical research is on the picture books that were nominated and awarded the “Original Slovene Picture Book Award”. A description is provided of those picture books that were nominated and awarded between 2004 and 2016. An analysis is conducted of the originality and diversity of nominated as well as awarded picture books. In addition, an analysis is conducted of the layout of text and illustration in the awarded picture books that are also analysed based on the characteristics of a contemporary fairy tale. An analysis of the paratext is included.
