Abstract

Abstract:
The master's thesis is derived from the study of the occurrence of suffixes and the usage of feminine forms of terms for occupations based on the following materials: Slovenski pravopis (Slovenian Orthography), Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika (Dictionary of Standard Slovenian) and its second edition. The results highlight the word formation processes (also the more recent ones) which are used to form feminine forms of terms, and the overlap between dictionaries and usage. The main purpose of the thesis is to show how meaningless feminine forms are in cases where they do not reflect the actual usage in the living language which is observed with the Gigafida corpus of written Slovenian texts. Analysis of feminine forms of terms for occupations from all three sources has shown that most of the feminine nouns are formed from masculine nouns and less frequently from a parallel base. There are only a few derivatives that do not have a common motivational word with a masculine form. The most common affix is the suffix -ka, followed by -ica and -inja. If we observe the actual usage, we can notice that there are more masculine than feminine forms of terms for occupations, however, the research shows that the formation of feminine forms is increasing.
