Naslov:
Women's right for decision of the presence of midwifery students at labour : diploma work
Izvleček:
Introduction: In the diploma thesis we presented the midwifery bachelor programme and the relations in the triad midwifery student – woman – midwife. Midwifery students and their clinical mentor, a midwife, must cooperate and offer midwifery care to women and work together for the sake of women's wellbeing. The midwife is primarily an advocate for women but she should also offer various learning situations for the student. How does a woman experience the presence of a midwifery student was the main question in the diploma thesis. Purpose: The purpose of this diploma thesis is to find the reasons why women decide for or against the presence of midwifery students at labour and to research their experiences with the students. Methods: In the theoretical part of the thesis we used a descriptive method with a systematic review of domestic and foreign scientific literature. The literature was searched in the Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, DiKUL and COBISS.SI databases. In the second part we used a descriptive causal-non-experimental method of empirical research. The instrument of research was an anonymous, online questionnaire. Sampling was carried out according to the snowball model. The sample consisted of women who gave birth between 1. 1. 2005 and 31. 8. 2018. There were 753 valid completed questionnaires. Results: The results showed that 68 % of women allowed the presence of midwifery students, the reason being that they wanted to help them gain more practical experience. 13 % of women that allowed the presence of midwifery students pointed out that the decision was forced on them. 44 % of women did not wish for many people in the delivery room and therefore refused the presence of midwifery students at labour. Among the women who did not have the opportunity to decide because the midwifery students did not have practical lessons at the time of their labour, 64 % said they would like to have a midwifery student present. Discussion and conclusion: Midwifery student contributed to the labour with his presence, knowledge, motivation and comprehension. Further and more qualitative research is needed to determine the reason behind bad experience of women who had a midwifery student present (maybe even without consent). Midwifery students, as well as their clinical mentors, should be reminded that they need women’s consent for the presence of a student at labour. Women should as well be introduced to the role and responsibility of midwifery students.
