In this diploma paper, domestic violence and the concept of social support for victims of domestic violence are presented. First, domestic violence is defined and different types of domestic violence are described (physical, psychological, sexual, economic ...). Most often, the victims are female partners, i.e. women, and children. However, some “new” forms of domestic violence exist, for example violence between children, violence against parents by children, violence against seniors etc. There are different reasons for violent behaviour, but they are very complex and intertwined. Several forms of social support exist, such as informational support that offers the acquisition of information, instrumental support, for example financial support, and emotional support, which is the most common and offered by individuals that work closely with the victims. All these forms of social support are very important to victims of domestic violence. The second part of the paper deals with support offered to victims by a safe house in Slovenj Gradec in the Koroška region. In the empirical part, the operations of the safe house and social security services of Slovenj Gradec are presented. In addition, interviews were carried out with victims of domestic violence that sought help in the safe house and also victims that did not turn seek institutional help. Lastly, some results of social support found online are presented as well.
