This master’s thesis investigates three key topics: 1) the use of Slovene terms in the Slovene Normative Guide and Standard Slovene Dictionary; 2) the development of Slovene terminology in Slovene newspapers until 1940; and 3) the use of nicknames of clubs and national teams in Slovene online media from 2010 to 2017. The main focus was to establish when and how Slovene football terminology started to appear in these dictionaries, how the newspapers used football terms until 1940, which languages the terms were adopted from, and how online media write the nicknames of football clubs and national teams today—that is, whether they cite, translate, or adapt them. In order to facilitate understanding of the development of Slovene football terminology, this master’s thesis also includes a brief history of football in Slovenia and neighboring countries.
