Abstract

Title:Digital motherhood: the role of social capital and social networks in the challenges of motherhood
Abstract:
In the light of the intensive motherhood ideology, which is predominant in Western society, maternity brings to mothers many issues related with care and upbringing of children, while at the same time it challenges them with coping with the new identity, psychological burdens and achieving the expectations from the environment. On the one hand, web and social networks reproduce ideological pressures, but on the other hand, they offer tools to help mothers overcome identity challenges as well as they play an important role in maintaining or establishing social capital. The aim of following master's thesis was to research what kind of experiences mothers and pregnant women have with web and social support groups in everyday life, what changes in the use they notice, what is the role of the web and social support groups when it comes to finding answers for identity challenges and issues related to pregnancy and maternity and how social support groups assist them in establishing and maintaining social capital. Through the qualitative method of focus groups, I came to the conclusion that Facebook support groups represent a great source of information and support and offer users communication that helps the transition to maternity. Nevertheless, the mothers, involved in research, have also expressed a certain amount of criticism and reluctance to these tools.
