Ivan Cankar wrote his fourth drama The King of Betajnova in 1901 while Shakespeare wrote his Hamlet for about three hundred years before. Cankar's drama takes place in a small square of Betajnova and Shakespeare's in the Danish royal court after the king's death. Kantor is a criminal who rules Betajnova. His opponent named Maks is trying to disable his further crimes. Claudius, the new king of Denmark, killed his brother and married his widow. Dead king's son Hamlet is trying to fix the injustice. Both kings are very violent and there's no place for love in their lifes. In my thesis I was occupying myself with the analysis of two motifs. I was comparing the motif of love and the motif of violence in both dramas, their influence on the characters and action.
