Abstract

Abstract:
Madame Bovary, written by Gustave Flaubert, was first published in 1857. The story takes place in France. This realist novel talks about the emptiness of provincial life and marriage. The main character is Emma Bovary. She tries to get away from her dreary, unfavourable marriage with various love affairs. The thesis compares the motif of love and disloyalty in Flaubert's Madame Bovary with Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina from 1878. The main character Anna Karenina is unhappy with her marriage. She finds her true love in Vronski. The comparison was focused on the analysis of the motif of adultery, the motif of the influence of society, the motif of motherly love, the motif of the unideal husband and the motif of suicide.
