This diploma thesis discusses the idea of the tragic in the novel in general and mainly focuses on finding tangible links in Lionel Shriver's prize-winning novel We Need to Talk About Kevin. As the terms "tragic" and "tragedy" are closely connected, the first part tries to establish their differences and common features. It tries to show that it is possible to search for tragic elements in the novel which has turned into the dominant genre of the 21st century. The second part is more practically oriented seeking proves and possibilities for the realisation of the tragic in We Need to Talk About Kevin finding out that the tragic is not only deeply incorporated into the structure and the story itself, but it also pervades the characters and the ideas they convey.
