Abstract

Abstract:
The diploma thesis researches the term defamiliarization effect with Russian formalists and Bertolt Brecht. The term defamiliarization effect was first introduced into his theory by Victor Shklovsky, the leading member of Russian formalists. The term defamiliarization effect Russian formalists connect with artistry, with a characteristic, which separates an artistic text from a non-artistic one. Defamiliarization effect causes that our everyday perception of an object or event, which is automatized in our consciousness, is put into a new context and therefore defamiliarize it. Everyday perception changes into an artistic perception with defamiliarization, which is a foundation of artistry. The term of defamiliarization effect is taken over by Bertolt Brecht from Russian formalists. Even though Brecht does not use defamiliarization effect to cause artistry but to encourage socially critical thinking of an individual. With defamilarization effect, Brecht can show social relationships on stage and with that enables that the spectator keeps his distance to social relationships and events, as well as criticism, which is needed for social changes.
