In the thesis we will discuss four anthologies: Magic Garden: Stories and Poems with Illustrations by Jelka Reichman (2009), The Fairy Tale Tree: Stories and Poems with Illustrations by Marlenka Stupica (2015), Magical Blossom: Stories and Poems with Illustrations by Marjanca Jemec Božič (2013) and Golden Bird: Stories and Poems with Illustrations by Ančka Gošnik Godec (2011). The thesis is composed of two parts: the theoretical and the empirical part. The first chapter of the theoretical part describes the development of picture books and the development of Slovenian picture books; presented are the various definitions and classifications of picture books, types of picture books, types of communication between readers and picture books, difficulty levels and types of picture books depending on the creative process. The second chapter is about the definitions of illustrations and youth book illustrations, the role and the importance of high-quality illustrations for child development, the principle of creativity and quality, the criteria for determining the quality of the illustrations, as well as the history and development of the Slovene book illustration. The third chapter of the theoretical part is dedicated to the life and work of illustrators. In this chapter the female illustrators are presented (Jelka Reichman, Marjanca Jemec Božič, Marlenka Stupica and Ančka Gošnik Godec), their lives, work, and selected awards. In the fourth chapter, each of their anthologies is presented.
A literary-comparative analysis of four literary anthologies is presented in the empirical part, as well as chronological lists of anthologies, lists of authors of anthologies in order author –female author, lists of authors of anthologies according to the ratio of domestic – foreign authors, lists of authors of anthologies according to folk literature and author's literature, lists of authors of anthologies based on original and translation literature, lists of authors of anthologies based on literary type, author’s picture book and picture books with no text.
Presented are also the tables of authors of the individual anthologies and of all four anthologies together, based on the number of illustrated works. The lists and tables are also illustrated and described.
