Abstract

Title:Line and its printmaking modalities
Abstract:
The art theory distinguishes between three types of lines; active, passive and medial. Their artistic concretizations are lines that appear in different materials and with different tools. Because of that we can also talk about their different forms and modalities. The line, as the main printmaking expressive element, has a number of different modalities. In my thesis I was most interested in lines in the printmaking technique vernis mou. In my diploma thesis I first analyzed a line from its art theory point of view. Then I analyzed how different printmaking techniques can influence the line and its character. In the next chapter, I presented two different techniques of intaglio print: the etching technique and technique of soft coating or vernis mou. These are also the techniques I used for my own work of printmaking. I presented the whole process of print-making in these techniques from preparing the base, drawing on the plate, etching, print-making and drying the prints. After that I described in more detail the lines in the technique of vernis mou and etching and found out what kind of possibilities this techniques offers us regarding to the use of the line. I also presented four artists that, in their works of art, represented motifs mainly through the manipulation of lines in intaglio print. I analyzed some of their works and tried to find out how they used different lines in their works. In the end, I presented my own works of art that I created in the techniques of vernis mou and etching (“etchanica”). In my work, I wanted to use different types of lines and explore the interaction between them in one motif and on one panel. In the upgrade, I tried to print one motif on one paper from two separated panels and investigated the traces that appear from this process. I further upgraded my work by finding out what kind of effects appear if I combine different colors and lines in one motif.
