Abstract
Reja provenienc Aviagen BUT Big-6 in Hybrid Converter je potekala v zaprtih hlevih nastlanih z lesnimi oblanci.

Title:Analysis of relationship of body weight and litter condition to prevalence of breast and foot pad dermatitis in Slovenian commercial fattening turkey flocks
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of breast and foot pad dermatitis in nine Slovenian fattening turkey commercial flocks and to identify possible factors affecting the incidence and severity of contact dermatitis: genotype, sex, farm, age and litter condition. Flocks of Aviagen BUT Big-6 and Hybrid Converter were kept in environmentally controlled houses littered with wood shavings. Some of the data were collected on the farms and some at the processing plant. During each of six visits at the ages of 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 18 weeks, randomly selected samples of animals were individually weighed and scored for foot pad dermatitis (FPD). At each visit litter quality score was also recorded. Foot pad health, severity of breast blisters and litter quality were scored on 3-point scale where highest score represented feet having no lesions, breast having big lesion and dry, no caked litter. In all weighings males were heavier (p0.0001) than females and turkeys of genotype Aviagen BUT Big-6 were heavier (p0.0001) than turkeys of genotype Hybrid Converter. We observed body weight to be associated with litter condition. Turkeys on caked litter (score 1) exhibited lower body weight compared with when on litter of medium quality (score 2) and dry, no caked litter (score 3). The FPD severity was affected by the age (p0.0001), litter quality (p=0.0004) and farm (p=0.03), but not by the genotype (p0.05). A significantly higher severity of FPD was found in flocks reared on litter scored with 1 and 2 than on dry, no caked litter (score 3). Severity of FPD increased over time. Female turkeys exhibited lower prevalence of breast blisters and lower rate of lesions due to FPD compared to males as measured at processing plant. The flocks mean percentages of FPD at time of slaughter found in this study ranged from 47.5% to 87.5%.
