Triathlon is a young sport discipline and is, according to many opinions, one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It consists of three different endurance disciplines which the athlete must perform uninterruptedly, namely swimming, cycling and running. The development of the triathlon is reflected in its popularity, organisation and media coverage in the world and in Slovenia. In the development of the triathlon, Slovenia is still lagging behind other "successful" countries, but this gap is decreasing from year to year.
The diploma thesis addresses the development of triathlon in Slovenia by using the indicators of the development and a survey of Slovenian clubs on the status of triathlon schools. The research was divided into two parts. In the first part, we analysed the statistics of licensed athletes, won international medals, the categorisation of OKS-ZŠZ and progress in professional staff by using the development indicators. The results of the first part showed the increase in the number of licensed athletes in younger categories, the increase of professional staff and their education or competence, which is directly connected with the development of the result on the international level, which is reflected in the increase of the won international medals and, above all, in the increased number of categorised athletes in the framework of OKS-ZŠZ. In the second part, a survey of Slovenian triathlon clubs was conducted, which gave us information on the focus of work with young people and the state of triathlon schools throughout Slovenia. The results indicate an increasing focus of work with young people in clubs and a professional approach in the development of young athletes, which together with the indicators results reflect the increase in the quality of triathlon in Slovenia. Both findings will give us a better insight into the status of triathlon in Slovenia.
