OpenBIM approach is a state-of-the-art approach enabling improved project communication, information exchange and collaboration between participants of design and construction processes. The thesis provides a theoretical overview of OpenBIM, an analysis of possibilities of the use of IFC within OpenBIM approach and analysis of positive impacts of OpenBIM approach.
In the first part OpenBIM approach is described alongside with its advantages and disadvantages. Comparison with more traditional approaches is made (CAD, Closed BIM). A detailed literature survey of conferences and technical papers in the years 2017 and 2018 is provded. The importance of IFC standard for data sharing, its extensions and other standards (Model View Definition, Information Delivery Manual, International Framework for Dictionaries, BIM Collaboration Format) are reviewed. The IFC certification presented and the newest version of IFC Schema, IFC4 is reviewed along with its latest developments.
Practical part analyzes different usage scenarios of IFC models for the exchange of models in the AEC industry (architectural, structural, analytical models, cost analysis models). Model sharing between different platforms – i.e., export and import of IFC model for version IFC4 - is assessed.
The last part analyzes technical, business and collaboration aspect of OpenBIM. In technical aspect IFC the implementation of IFC in different applications is analyzed, i.e., the use of different translators for model import and export. Business aspect demonstrates positive effects of OpenBIM approach in practical use; and collaboration aspect focuses on the interoperability problem in construction along with other areas (impact on construction process, data accuracy, sustainability and environmental preservation, health and safety, competitiveness, education, and intellectual property rights).
