This diploma thesis discusses the history of open access from the beginning of the movement to the present. The thesis explains essential concepts in relation to open access and presents important historical milestones in the development of the movement as well as three OA advocates. We have found that the development of the movement for open access to scientific literature was carried out in different stages. Things have moved from individual attempts to bring about change in its early stages to an institutional and international level. Work in this field has not yet been completed, as there are still many open issues on the part of scientists, publishers, scientific institutions and politics.
