The purpose of the Master’s Thesis was to study the usefulness of Vegetation Condition Index and Standardized Precipitation Index, for observing droughts with satellite imagery. The usefulness of the indices was checked in the area of meteorological stations Lendava, Ljubljana Bežigrad, Novo mesto and Postojna, for which we have information on actual land use (deciduous forest, mixed land-use, fields, meadows, vineyards, coniferous forest and plantations). For selected points, we obtained data on time series MODIS MOD13Q1 and calculated Vegetation Condition Index. The calculated values of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI1, SPI2, SPI3, SPI4, SPI6, SPI9, SPI12) we compared with Vegetation Condition Index. A comparison was made in the order to find out, how the indices were correlated with each other. This would provide information on the extent, to which the vegetation response to the precipitation deficit. Based on the results, we commented on the usefulness of the indices and made important findings.
