Abstract

Title:Biological systems for reducing point source pesticides contamination on farm
Abstract:
Point source pesticide contamination of water and soil resources on farm can pose a serious problem that can be reduced by a specific biopurification systems (biobeds). The system is inexpensive, easy to build and maintain, and can be constructed from materials available on the farm. It is important to place the systems in places where point source pesticides contamination is increased. This is mainly the place where spray solution is prepared and where the sprayers are washed. We can build closed or open biobed. Biobeds are different in purpose of use and components. We also have a large selection of materials that can be used for a biomixture, which should have the ability to retain and degrade pesticides. The original biomixture consists of straw, peat, and soil, but we can use also several different organic materials. Biomixture composition and ratio between components of the biomixture affect the biobed efficiency, quantity, activity and composition of microorganisms. In particular, the composition of microorganisms is influenced by the pH of the mixture, the amount of available lignin and nitrogen, and the ratio between carbon and nitrogen. Other factors such as age, temperature, humidity of the system and the amount of water entering the system are also have influence on the system effectiveness. The system needs to be adapted to the local climate.
