Abstract

Title:Beauty as the path to God
Abstract:
The thesis concerns itself with the transcendental of beauty, which is defined by basic philosophical definitions and the explanation of the word’s etymology and meaning. Historical overview of beauty as a concept, backed by the theories of some of the most prominent thinkers, shows that that the concept of beauty is not static, as it changed and developed through the history. The concept of beauty is analysed as the fourth transcendental, which belongs to the unum – bonum – verum trinity, but is lesser known as it was added later, giving it a slightly different status than the others. The analysis of beauty in the Bible – in the New Testament – shows the beauty as one of the ways in which God addresses man and in which man can recognise God. Letter to Artists (CD 82), written by the Pope John Paul II is often referenced as it emphasizes the value of art in Christianity as it is an important conveyor of aesthetics. Art bears an important role in Christianity since it represents a suitable agent for conveying the beauty and when its content is the word of God, also the Beauty itself.

Keywords:beauty, transcendentals, Christianity, art, theology of beauty, philosophy of aesthetics.
