The aim of the diploma thesis is to develop and present a collection of knitted lights. In the thesis, the entire process is demonstrated from the inspiration to the final product.
In the theoretical part, we write about designers whose works relate to the making of knitted lights. We present some design ideas and support them with actual products made. In this part of the thesis, we also include a designer that specializes in light design and designers who work with knitting. After that a comparison of lightbulbs on the market is shown and we talk about LED technology that is used later in the experiment part. The theoretical part ends with optic fibers and their usage in light design.
The experimental part of the thesis starts with presentation of a knitted mohair light, that gave the inspiration. This light was part of previous project called “The Aspect of a Woman”. Then the discussion of the questions posed by this knit lamp in the room follows. Based on the findings and experiments we developed a collection of four knitted lights. Furthermore, the knitting machine used is presented, and the process of making the knitted lamps. This part explains it all – the beginning idea, the materials used and the way lights are produced. All new pieces of the collection are separately presented.
