Abstract

Title:Slovenians and fear of islam
Abstract:
Although Islam has had a significant impact on the development of European identity and unity, and Muslims have long been a part of European nations, Europeans know Islam poorly. Maine source of information about Islam is mostly mass media, which plays the role of a carrier of meanings and myths, and continues to propagate and to consolidate them on a daily basis with sensationalistic way of reporting. Slovenia is no exception in this. In my master's thesis, I investigated the historical and cultural reasons for the dislike and fear of the Slovenians towards Muslims, which were clearly demonstrated during the public debate on the construction of the mosque and are still reflected in the controversy surrounding the name of the Dzamijska Street. I used scientific literature related to this topic and conducted a critical discourse analysis of forty-eight articles published in 2017 on the websites of 24ur and MMC RTV SLO. I have found that most of the articles on Muslims are linked to terrorism or violence in the Middle East. Slovene Muslims, on the other hand, are rarely mentioned and mostly only as representatives of their religion. It seems that Muslims cannot exist in Slovenian public space as mere citizens.
