Abstract

Title:Study of model systems for temporary stabilisation of paint layers
Abstract:
The master's thesis focuses on the study of the most suitable material and technique for the temporary stabilization of the unstable paint layer, which is usually required before the transport of critical objects. I approached the subject with a pre-prepared surfaces common with polychrome sculptures on which I applied different consolidants (Paraloid B72, Aquazol 200, hide glue). The two-week exposure time to accelerated aging with temperature (55 °C) simulated 4 weeks of aging at room temperature (24 °C), which is usually the waiting time before the actual treatment. I was interested in finding out whether age of the applied consolidant affects its later removal or not. Cyclododecane was also applied to the same surfaces, but due to its specific action it was handled differently. The consolidants were removed after accelerated aging. Changes that took place during the aging procedure and the success of removal of the individual consolidant, were observed through photography in visible and UV light. Color change was measured with cromameter on different stages of the experiment. Lastly I examined temporary consolidation from a practical point of view and evaluated how my research could affect procedures of temporary consolidation.
