Abstract

Title:The construction of gender through photographs of food on Instagram
Abstract:
In the increasingly digitalized society food and forms of nutrition are documented and presented in various ways. New technology, such as smartphones and fast Internet access, allows us to instantly document our lives on social networks. Growingly frequent practice is sharing photographs of food on social networks, such as Instagram. Digital media that are focused on representing, documenting and following eating habits of people, are at the same time important contributors to individual’s self-confidence, identity, social relationships, etc. In an increasingly mediated environment, we often see posts with photographs of food. Food has always been a key element in our lives, since it is a fuel for our bodies. Through the choice of food, its preparation and publication, individuals also express their identity. I examined the growingly popular trend through a multimodal analysis, because I was interested how gender is constructed through photographs of food and how differences between genders are showing. I classified the photographs into three categories for easier analysis: 1. desserts, 2. meat and fish, and 3. sandwiches and burgers. I determined that gender is still constructed through photographs of food on Instagram, however, it is not as noticeable in the choice of food, but rather that key factors revealing gender differences when posting photographs of food are: 1. representation and appearance of dishes and 2. size of dishes or quantity of food products portrayed in a photograph.
