In this dissertation paper, we took the sample of five games played in the group stage and analysed the offensive game efficency of Slovenian basketball team at the European championship 2017 in Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey where Slovenia won the first place and entered the European basketball anals with golden letters.
Using official videos from FIBA's website, we looked and analyzed all the offensive plays and classified them as counter offense, early offense and set offense. In each play, we recorded the following characteristics: duration of the play, the number of players directly involved in the play (they touched the ball at the time of the play), the way of finishing the play, (in)effectiveness of the play and which player finished the play. In set offense, we also presented the course of the most frequently used plays and graphically sketched them.
With five wins and without a single loss, the Slovenian team won first place in group A. Through the analysis of efficiency, we found that the Slovene game was based on counter-offense plays and quick conclusions of early and set offense and that the long bench with many rotations of coach Kokoškov allowed a consistently high pace of the game through the entire group stage of the competition.
