Abstract

Title:Meaning of color in impresionism
Abstract:
The thesis concentrates on the meaning of colour in impressionism. It is divided into two parts. The first part explores art theory, beginning with an introduction into the characteristic features of impressionism and its main representatives. Follows a presentation of the physical and physiological background of colour perception, as well as the characteristics of colour as an element of art. Colour then becomes the main topic: I focus on presenting the characteristics of modernist transformation of colour in impressionist painting, trying to define the differences between an illusionistic and planar role of colour. This theoretical background is finally connected to the attributes and the main representatives of Slovenian impressionism, as well as with formal analyses of their key works with the emphasis on colour use. The second, practical part, is composed of a cycle of personal paintings, supported with short analyses and contemplations on the role of colour. It is based on the exploration of painting light, achieving an expression of life and a simultaneous colour harmony or balance.
