The concern for one’s own health is becoming an increasingly important topic, which includes particularly the awareness about healthy nutrition and importance of regular physical activity. Healthy nutrition is an important element in the individual’s every day and brings well-being. In order to for us to be able to upgrade our knowledge about nutrition throughout the stages of life, it is important that already primary school pupils obtain knowledge about nutrition and skills, which are important for the development of food literacy. Food literacy represents the connection of knowledge, skills and behaviour, which are necessary for the planning, ensuring, selection, preparation and consumption of food. Food literacy is important for the formation of the individual’s healthy eating habits.
The purpose of the thesis is to determine the food literacy Czech primary school pupils at the end of the obligatory primary school education and compare it with the results of Slovenian primary school pupils. I was checking the food literacy of 170 students of a primary school in Brno with the help of a test, which included all four fields of food literacy: food planning, food selection, preparation of food and eating.
In the Czech primary school system, food education is being carried out within different subjects. The results show satisfying knowledge of students. Students have proven their knowledge about food planning with regards to one’s needs and about food preparation and eating. Students gained a less favourable score in the field of food selection, where we noticed a lack of knowledge about the composition of food and about nutrients. I would conclude that Czech primary school pupils are gaining certain theoretical knowledge about food and less practical skills, which they are less often faced with within lessons.
