Slovenian cultural heritage is an important asset of our national identity that is many times forgotten and negatively affected by globalization. It seems, therefore, that it is slowly disappearing. Literature was, historically, the one that helped languages evolve and thus also strengthened national identity and social values.
In the master's thesis, we focused on the question of how to increase the interest for Slovenian literature in general public and especially younger population, while at the same time draw attention to the social values we are losing as a society.
We try to convey this question through playing cards designed for the purposes of this master thesis. Through the game, we want to stimulate the integration of the values that we display in the illustrations of heroes from Slovenian literature, raise national consciousness and consequently contribute to the higher level of culture in society.
The design language of the playing cards has changed over the years. The appearance was not affected only by time, but also by the place of origin. A playing card is, therefore, a suitable media for connecting current issues with cultural heritage.
We have explored the history of the creation of playing cards, the theory of their arrival in Europe, the patterns that were created in different parts of Europe and the changes that led to the cards we know today. In order to provide the widest possible target group, we focused on French standard cards, which are currently the most common type of cards in the world. The characteristics of the French set served as the basis for the playing cards designed in the experimental part of the master's thesis.
