In the master's degree, the concept of identity in the context of magical realism or its initial phase, which is bound to the analysis of the concepts of time, memory, history, language and literature in the short story Viaje a la semilla in the novel Los pasos perdidos/ The lost steps from Alejo Carpentier, is studied. One of the first authors of Hispano-American literature paved the way with this work for the great authors of magical realism. In the first, theoretical part of the paper, the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan is presented and the basic characteristics of imaginative, symbolic and realistic, including their mechanisms of action, which are applied in the second, practical part of this paper, are explained. Biographical elements from the life of the author are included as well as the context in which these works were made, and are therefore relevant for understanding the concept of identity, which is specific and subordinate to constant change. We were establishing that the basic concepts such as time, history and language, in the world of Alejo Carpeniert, cannot be comprehended in only one way, and that the negation of one concept can mean its affirmation.
