Introduction: In the modern times in which we live, people are facing with globalization, what results in the occurrence of multiculturalism and multi-religiousness of certain areas. The populations of individual countries are no longer as religiously and culturally unified as they used to be, which requires certain adjustments and familiarization with other religions and their customs. Familiarizing with and understanding the fundamentals of religions is equally important as knowing certain health care procedures since knowing the patients’ way of life and their religion can lead to better and higher quality health care. Aim: The aim of the diploma thesis is to present the fundamentals of Islam; to identify the elements of religion and the customs that mark the life transitions of a member of Islam; to emphasize the connection between certain religious practices and the nursing care – the work of a nurse, and the importance of these practices, in order to improve knowledge in the field of religious competence of a nurse. Methods: A descriptive method of research was used. An overview of specialised and scientific literature was conducted in the following databases: CINAHL with full text, MEDLINE and Cochrane. There were no time limits regarding the publication of the articles due to the subject matter of the literature in question. The overview was carried out between February 2017 and July 2017. Results: Certain customs in the lives of members of the Islamic religion mark transition phases and thus mark their whole lives. It is important that nurses are acquainted with these customs to ensure professional medical treatment. It is precisely due to the close association between Islam and the life of a Muslim that religion and respect for religious customs need to be taken into account when carrying out medical interventions and providing health care. Discussion and conclusion: It is essential for health care workers to remain professional and competent. As professionals they need to be aware that meeting the patients’ religious needs are very important. They must be able to recognize such needs. Correct approach to the patient and interest in the patient’s religiousness is of the utmost importance for nurses. Acting according to the patient’s religiousness, accepting and integrating the religion into medical care is crucial for the patient. Knowledge of the fundamentals of a particular religion and cooperation with the patient bring satisfaction and deliver good results to the patients.
