Abstract

Title:
Is it possible to successfuly sequester carbon in soil when applying conservational tillage?
Abstract:
Conservational tillage is defined as tillage at which 30% of soil surface is permanently covered with crop residue. Soil is not ploughed with conventional moldboard plough. Sometimes we call it reduced tillage, because there are less needed operations, which are not so intense. When applying reduced tillage, we use special tools which do not turn or heavily disturb the soil, just loose or crumble it. In this thesis, I will present conservation tillage and its effects on soil quality and its ability to sequester carbon in comparison to conventional tillage. There are many scientific studies on this topic with different results and views, so I will present the topic from a wider perspective because I think its necessary to get the whole picture. Carbon sequestration in soil can be an important factor from global view, because with destabilized global carbon cycle we face negative effects on climate and we know that soils have great potential to sequester carbon.
