Demenca je bolezen, o kateri se vedno več govori, saj na svetu živi vedno več ljudi z demenco. Zaradi svojih značilnosti in posledic, ki jih s sabo prinese demenca, je še vedno povezana z veliko stigmo. Stigma zaradi demence prizadene tako človeka z demenco kot njegove sorodnike. Zaradi nepoznavanja značilnosti demence v javnosti so tako ljudje z demenco kot njihovi sorodniki pogosto izključeni iz družbe. Pri praktičnem delovanju se moramo socialne delavke truditi, da čim bolj zmanjšamo, če ne celo izničimo, učinke stigme na ljudi. Zato je pomembno, da bi že otroci spoznali značilnosti demence na njim prilagojen način. Da pa bi lahko začeli to uresničevati, je pomembno izvesti raziskavo o tem, koliko otroci sploh vedo o demenci. Izvedla sem kvalitativno raziskavo, pri kateri sem opravila pet fokusnih skupin v 5. razredih v osnovnih šolah po Sloveniji. Opravila sem tudi intervjuje z osnovnošolskimi učitelji o tem, kaj oni menijo o ozaveščanju o demenci. Za 5. razred sem se odločila, ker je v učnem načrtu pri predmetu družba opisanih veliko tem, med katere bi lahko umestili tudi temo demence. Ugotovila sem, da je znanje o demenci med otroki odvisno od tega, ali poznajo človeka z demenco ali ne. Tisti, ki so že imeli izkušnjo s človekom z demenco, so imeli do ljudi z demenco pozitiven odnos in nanje niso gledali kot sebi drugačne. Tisti, ki še niso imeli izkušnje s človekom z demenco, si niso znali najbolje predstavljati, kaj demenca sploh je. Vsi otroci so med fokusno skupino izrazili veliko zanimanja za temo. Hkrati pa sem raziskovala tudi, kakšno je stališče učiteljev glede ozaveščanja o demenci in kakšno je njihovo mnenje o tem, kaj o demenci vedo otroci. Izvedla sem osem intervjujev z osnovnošolskimi učitelji. Od tega so bile tri učiteljice razredničarke 5. razredov, kjer je bila izvedena fokusna skupina, ena pa zaposlena v šoli, kjer je bila narejena fokusna skupina. Izkazalo se je, da je večina učiteljev naklonjena ozaveščanju o demenci in se jim zdi, da bi s tem spremenili pogled otrok na demenco, hkrati pa bi otroci dobili znanje za nadaljnje življenje. Strinjajo se, da tisti otroci, ki poznajo človeka z demenco, o demenci že nekaj vedo in na človeka z demenco ne gledajo diskriminatorno. Tisti, ki ne poznajo človeka z demenco, pa tudi demence in njenih značilnosti ne poznajo najbolje. Večina sodelujočih je videla možnost vključitve teme demence v učni načrt.

Naslov:Knowledge on Dementia Among Children in Elementary School

Since the number of people living with dementia is growing, the awareness about the disease is increasing. However, due to the characteristics that dementia brings with it, it is still related to stigma. Stigma affects both person with dementia and relatives of person with dementia. Due to lack of knowledge of the characteristics of dementia in public both people with dementia and their relatives are often excluded from the society. Social workers in their practice have to strive to minimize, if not eliminate, the effects of stigma on people. It is important that children understand the characteristics of dementia. However, to raise awareness among children about dementia, we must first know how much children already know about dementia. I carried out a qualitative survey by conducting five focus groups at four different primary schools in Slovenia. In addition, I interviewed primary school teachers about what they thought about raising awareness of dementia. I chose the fifth grade because there are many topics in the syllabus of the subject Družba, which means learning about society, which could include the topic of dementia. The results show that knowledge about dementia among children depends on whether or not they know the person with dementia. Those who already had experience with a person with dementia had a positive attitude towards people with dementia and did not view them as different to others. Those who have not yet had experience with a person with dementia could not really imagine what dementia means. All the children expressed great interest in the topic during the focus groups. At the same time, I also researched how teachers view raising awareness of dementia and what they think children thought about dementia. So I also interviewed eight primary school teachers. Of those, three were class teachers in the class where I conducted the focus group and one was employed at the school where the focus group was carried out. The results show that most teachers are in favour of raising awareness about dementia, and they feel that this would change children’s views on dementia for better, while at the same time, children would gain knowledge for later life. They agreed that those children who know a person with dementia already know something about dementia and do not discriminate person with dementia. However, those who do not know the person with dementia do not know a lot about dementia and its characteristics.
