Abstract

Title:Family as a covenant
Abstract:
The family, which - in accordance with the Christian Biblical revelation - is founded on the sacrament of marriage, is a form of a life covenant between God and man. In the paper this thesis is developed by first disclosing the typology of God's action in the history of redemption and then selecting the covenant as one of the types of this action. In the manner of a covenant God also acts in the Church and especially in the sacraments, thus also in the sacrament of holy matrimony. Since the content of each sacrament is the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ, this is the content of the sacrament of marriage as well. This also means that the sacrament of marriage and the relationship between husband and wife is not mainly an image of Christ's love for the Church, but that the sacrament of marriage is primarily a realization of Christ's love, which is a power that conquers death. The "Yes" of the husband and wife becomes a sacrament of God's "Yes" to man that was spoken in Jesus Christ. Thus, by this sacrament the risen Christ becomes a source of new life between husband and wife, which makes possible a total integration of the personalities of the couple since they promised to each other their mutual presence in their process of redemption, which includes the overcoming of all inconsistencies they brought with them into their marriage. Such an approach demands a shift of the emphasis from a functionalist notion of marriage and family to a personalist one.
