Because living in the built environment are evidently deteorating the international community has formulated special guidelines for thedevelopment of cities and other settlements (Istambul declaration, Agenda Habitat). They were prepared according to principles of sustainable development. In these guidelines future sustainable management of the built environment is directed towards rehabilitation of the present condition. These guidelines are integrated in Slovenian normatiove and evaluation documents. However, since these documents, especially the normative ones, are not mutualy cohorent and do not have necessary backup in development plans, guidelines, by-laws, modelsand different stimulation or restrictions, contemporary planning of the built environment doesn't manifest itself in our space. On the contrary, multi-layered deterioration of our cultural landscape continues relentlessly.
