The paper addresses the issue of traffic safety and discusses the role of the driver. Traffic accidents are categorized and the leading causes of crashes are presented. The author deals separately with direct and indirect human causes of accidents, i.e. the subject's (non)acting that increases the probability of a crash, and the factors influencing the driver's ability to drive safely. In view of the fact that human factor is the leading cause of crashes, the role of personality traits in road accidents is commented on. Thepaper closes with the discussion of driver tasks, and attempts to provide a theoretical explanation for these tasks.
