Tribological behavior of alumina for face seal applications with different roughness characteristics

The most important aspect of development of mechanical seals is the tribological design of seal faces. Tribological design amongst others involves the selection of materials and defining the tribological characteristics of sealing pair within the working limits. Performance of mechanical face seal depends on many factors, significantly also on materials and their roughness. In this paper the influence of different roughness parameters of the alumina used on face seals on tribological behavior are analysed. Short-internal PV test were performed on the computer-controlled test rig of our own design, where eight parameters were monitored on-line. Commercially available alumina was mated with different materials and tested in tap water. Results show that tribological parameters such as friction coefficient, wear and pressure-velocity limit are affected by different surface characteristics of the face materials.
