Role of microscopic simulation in designing and optimizing TMS

In the past years, the modeling of microscopic traffic simulation, which gives a realistic assessment of current and future traffic conditions, became a standard also in Slovenia. Therefore, the microscopic simulation shows itself as a very useful tool in the design and management of TMS. This requiresthe involvement of transport planners and designers of TMS. Traffic planners search for solution of traffic problems is extremely limited by space and other constraints, so sometimes the use of ITS measures is the only solution to traffic problem. On the other hand, the possibility of verifying the effects of such systems (before or during implementation) is very helpful for the designers of these systems that are often innovative and untested in practice. The paper investigates which measures can be modeled with microscopic simulation, how they can be modeled and describes ways of analyzing benefits. This is done on practical examples.
