The article discusses the role of the first book of poems by Dane Zajc, entitled Požgana trava (Burnt Grass), in the process of forming his poetics. The significance of this collection is shown from the point of view of his entire oeuvre, and some decisive poetic (semanticthematic) and (structural-grammatical) procedures of Zajc’s personal poetics that built his poetry from the beginning to the last poems are revealed. Light is also cast on the first critical responses to Zajc’s first book of poems, and their literary credibility and literarycritical competence is discussed.
