But I desire to be human. I know that the idea of the human as the subject of a historical dialectic does not hold, but neither will I take the anti-human as the basis of philoso-phy. I seek another figure that can represent what is excluded from the human but also struggles to be human. The name I give to this inclusive exclusion, exploited by the guardians of humanity, is the proletariat.
