Verbal irony serves as a key device for enhancing the comedic appeal of the series and shapes the dynamics between the six
characters, portraying group affiliation and revealing their underlying emotions and intentions. The theoretical part explains the concept of verbal irony and investigates the goals of the speakers who use it. It also presents the cues used by the speakers that help the listener to recognize ironic utterances. These cues involve tropes, namely metaphor, hyperbole, litotes, and rhetorical questions. The theoretical part also discusses the use of irony in situational comedies and some issues a translator might encounter faced with the phenomenon. The empirical part presents an analysis of ironic utterances from Friends and compares them with the Spanish translations. We describe the context in which the ironic utterances appear and determine whether verbal irony is expressed in the same way in Spanish, i.e. by using the same irony marker as in the source text.</dc:description><dc:date>2025</dc:date><dc:date>2025-02-24 07:45:20</dc:date><dc:type>Magistrsko delo/naloga</dc:type><dc:identifier>167469</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>VisID: 580189</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>COBISS_ID: 227704323</dc:identifier><dc:language>sl</dc:language></metadata>
