It first discusses music and language, their definition, origins and similarities. The interconnectedness of these two phenomena helps explain why the use of music in foreign language classrooms is so beneficial. Numerous authors provide proof that music motivates learners of all age groups, relaxes them and leads to faster acquisition and longer retention. The choice of music depends on the age of the students, the aim of the lesson and the benefit of music use that the teacher wants to maximise. In English language teaching, music without lyrics can be used as a background sound, as a means to change the atmosphere or as a lead in to a discussion. Songs can also be used to spark conversation or to change the mood, but they have other uses as well. As they include lyrics, they can be used to teach grammar, vocabulary or improve the students’ four skills. 
The practical part of the master’s thesis includes a survey which shines a light on the use of music during ELT classes in the last three grades of Slovenian primary schools. It analyses answers from 118 high school students who reflect on their past experiences, and reveals data regarding 49 different Slovenian primary schools. The results of the survey show that music is rarely used during ELT classes in the last three years of the majority of Slovenian primary schools. They reveal in which ways music and songs are most often used in such classes, what types of songs are most frequently used and what the students think about music use in ELT classes in the last three grades of Slovenian primary schools.  
In its discussion, the master’s thesis searches for possible reasons for the rare use of music in English language classes involving pre-teens and teenagers and offers solutions.
