It is based on an analysis of the psychiatric patient files of soldiers who were treated in two Croatian psychiatric hospitals from 1919 to 1924. Their process of social reintegration into the community after return from the battlefield is considered concerning their (in)ability to realise normative expectations regarding the gender role of men.
