Students' and teachers' attitudes and beliefs toward the use of the mother tongue in teaching English and SpanishKlasinc, Urška (Avtor) Skela, Janez (Mentor) Šifrar Kalan, Marjana (Mentor) The present master thesis attempts to analyse the Slovenian grammar school students' and their teachers' attitudes and beliefs towards the use of the L1 in English and Spanish monolingual classrooms. In order to obtain quantitative and qualitative data relevant to the research, both questionnaires and classroom observations were made use of. The questionnaires were disseminated to 269 first and fourth-year students of Spanish and English and to three English and three Spanish teachers of various Slovenian grammar schools. In line with a mounting body of literature in the field, the findings of this study attest to the teachers' and students' favourable outlook on the mother tongue employment in the FL classroom as well as its importance as an invaluable linguistic, lexical, socio-cognitive and also psychological tool. Moreover, our research also takes into consideration the frequency with which L1 is employed and provides evidence for the proficiency effect: the higher the students' proficiency level, the lesser the mother tongue support.[U.
