The thesis object is problem of vitamin D deficiency in sports and it gives an overview of the latest studies on vitamin D and sport performance.
Vitamin D is very important for human body. It is a vitamin that can be produced by the body itself and it is very useful for life in many ways. It is occurring when the skin is exposed to UVB rays, also we can enter it with food. Vitamin D deficiency can cause various problems such as bone diseases, neuromuscular diseases, diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular diseases and other autoimmune diseases. A sufficient amount of this vitamin is also important for optimum muscle strength, muscle regeneration, muscle activity and overall sport performance.
Vitamin D deficiency is very common among many athletes and it may represent limiting factors of different abilities. It turned out that in the absence of vitamin D also other abilities or characteristics of individuals are impaired. Muscle weakness can appear. For good functioning of muscular tissue, the homeostatic balance of calcium in the body is important, which is disrupted or destroyed in the absence of vitamin D. This can be shown both in skeletal muscles and in the heart muscle. It was found that strength and structure of the heart muscle can deteriorate. As the cardiac muscle loses power, the cardiorespiratory abilities of the individual are impaired. Also the structure of this muscle itself can change so that the heart regions get smaller that average. Weakness may also appear on laryngeal muscles, which can cause difficulty breathing during exercise. The lack of vitamin D was found to be one of the risk factors for stress fracture.
