Despite its small size, Slovenia has a large number of municipalities and the vast majority of small and medium-sized municipalities. It is precisely in these cases that the implementation of large projects is difficult to implement without some additional funding. In 1993, the municipalities in Slovenia were given the opportunity to introduce a joint municipal administration, thus obtaining an additional source of funding, as the participating municipalities divided the share of financing. According to the latest data, the number of joint municipal administrations has increased significantly since the beginning of the establishment, which shows that the municipalities are satisfied with the operation. Each inter-municipal network has both advantages and disadvantages, and it is crucial that municipalities coordinate with each other and take into account the interests of all participants. It is also important in the municipality to set up public companies to carry out tasks that are in the public interest and meet the needs of people in local communities, thus increasing the quality of life.
The purpose of the thesis was to learn how municipalities cooperate with each other, what the reasons for cooperation are and what are the advantages and disadvantages of cooperation. The aim was also to present and examine two examples from the local environment, i.e. one example of intermunicipal cooperation and one example of implementing public services in a municipality. The thesis presents the advantages and disadvantages of these types of cooperation. A description method was used to create the theoretical part of the thesis, where terms, definitions and operations in the field of local communities are described, while the method of compilation was used for the statements, extracts and quotations of other authors. In the empirical part, an interview was used to obtain the analysis of concrete examples of inter-municipal cooperation, and to compare the results with a comparative method. The results show that inter-municipal cooperation is important for municipalities, as it brings more advantages than weaknesses. In this way, municipalities are improving and progressing in development.
