Master's degree thesis main problem is focused on skier's personality traits and motivational
characteristics and their correlation with success in skiing. An expertise was performed in
order to check skier's personality traits and motivational characteristics in correlation with
their success in alpine skiing in season 2016/17.
The theoretical part introduces alpine skiing, it's beginnings and progress. It also describes the
modern skiing techniques and their connection with racing disciplines. What follows, are the
motivational definitions, motivational techniques and their connection with sport in general.
The last piece of theoretical part describes different personality theories and their connection
with skiers personality.
Practical part's goal was to determine the existence of correlation between skiers personality
traits, motivational characteristics and their success on the international skiing stage. We
compared the personality and motivation between younger and older skiers, between girls and
boys and between more and less successful skiers. The expertise was performed on 40
slovenian alpine skiers (26 boys, 14 girls) within an age group of 16-22. We analyzed the
skiers with the BFI, SMI and Costello tests. Each test has different statements on which the
analyze is later performed.
The results of the expertise have given us an insightful look on different aspects of skiers
personality and motivation. We found out, that the only statisticaly important factor which
influences the skiers results was extraversion. The other four personality traits and
motivational characteristics were not shown in correlation with results. We also compared
younger and older skiers, girls and boys and more and less successful skiers and we found
out, that only extraversion and the need for success are statistically important factors on skiers
results.
