Folk games represent an important part of our cultural heritage, as they show us the everyday life of the people who played them. Many folk games have been passed down through generations orally. With time they may have changed, but in their essence they remain the same. They have become part of folk customs and traditions. Folk games were simple, taken from everyday life, quickly understandable and did not require many acessories. During the youth of our grandparents, people did not have a lot of free time, their lives were filled with everyday tasks, but they still found time for games, thus enriching the unique and hard work. We decided to make a list of folk games in Novo mesto and its surrounding. Through field work, we questioned the local elderly population, and then wrote down the games in the form. We classified the games according to the age and gender of the players, the time and the opportunity to play. The master's thesis also presents the classifications of both worldwide and Slovenian researchers. Because they are passed down through generations orally, they can quickly be forgotten if they are not used. This is why it is important to both the local community and the folk heritage that these games are written down and thus preserved for later generations.
