The main purpose of this dissertation was to find the possible correlations between vertical jump battery tests and special basketball movement tests. We did 5 different special basketball high intensity movement tests and 4 different vertical jumps on a pressure plate. The testing included 16 basketball players, who were playing at least in Slovenian first division league for players under 19 years old.
Based on those correlations, we wanted to describe and present physical preparation in basketball, mainly devoted to the basketball coaches and also other individuals in one way or another connected to basketball as a sport. Along with that, we wanted to offer analysis of the basketball game, which serves as the base for the measurments we carried out. We described the energy demands of the basketball game collectively and by playing position. Goals of training process, the course of one typical basketball season in Slovenia and main focus points when planning and executing a physical preparation plan for basketball players are also included in the thesis.
Upon calculating Pearson correlation, we discovered that special basketball movement tests correlate best with the squat jump (SJ) and the counter movement jump (CMJ). The highest correlation was found between the test 20 meters sprint and height of both SJ (0,883; p=0,01) and CMJ (0,804; p=0,01). A high correlation was also found between the results from the test basketball defensive movement 6x5 meters with the change of direction and heights of SJ (0,716; p=0,01) and even more for CMJ (0,770; p=0,01). Between the test sprit 6x5 meters with change of direction and height of SJ, we found a high correlation (0,701; p=0,01). Tests sprint 5 meters and basketball movement arond the lane were moderately correlated to the parameters of SJ and CMJ. The correlation between the special basketball movement tests and parameters of both drop jumps, from 20 and 40 centimeters height (DJ20 and DJ40), was lower.
Further on we discovered that the squat jump is more important for starting acceleration and the counter movement jump is more important for the lateral basketball defensive movement. Based on correlation between special basketball tests and vertical jump battery tests, we can analyse results from the special basketball tests and connect them to the qualities usually measured by the vertical jump battery tests (particularly the squat jump and the counter movement jump).
