Electronic prescribing of outpatient prescriptions is an information technology solution in the field of healthcare, which will gradually make the prescription process paperless. It will allow for an increase in transparency, a facilitated prevention of errors, better data analysis and a standardized electronic healthcare record. An information system designed, for electronic prescribing, must be able to integrate with other systems to acquire data regarding the patient’s current and past prescriptions, and send it to the central record. More, its usage should seem unambiguous to the user, it must allow for a safe usage and assist the patient throughout the decision making process.
This thesis offers an insight into the development process of such a healthcare information system from the early design phase to the delivery to the end user. The thesis begins with an outline of the medical background and the business practices underpinning the prescription process. Then, it describes a case study of the healthcare process, the development and the testing phase of the information system, and the final delivery stage to the end user.
