In industrial systems, employees are constantly exposed to hazards. Therefore the machine representing danger of injuries or even death to employees must be protected in such a way that prevents access to it or the access is possible if no hazard is present. In the first part of the thesis, hazards to which people are exposed in industry and criteria taken into account during the development of a safety system are presented. In the continuation, the implementation of safety measures for protecting hazardous area of a robot in an industrial system is introduced. The robot’s task is to carry packages and stack them in layers on empty pallets. Packages are transported into the protected zone using package conveyors. The safety of this area is provided with the use of safety devices such as safety fences, safety light curtains, emergency stop buttons and safety doors. To provide safety of the hazardous area of the machine, devices capable of monitoring and controlling the aforementioned safety elements are needed. For this purpose, safety relays and safety programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are used. In the thesis, both ways of controlling safety elements for the above-mentioned example of ensuring safety of a robot’s hazardous area are presented. The thesis includes also a written safety program for controlling safety elements with the safety PLC.
