A wide range of diverse experiments with liquid nitrogen can be found in the literature. Liquid nitrogen is a liquid with a boiling point at –196 ° C. Not only can it be used as a tool for teaching because it allows displaying different phenomena, but also highly motivates students to work in addition to its strangeness. In the literature we did not find reports on the use of liquid nitrogen at primary level. Since this liquid can properly illustrate certain phenomena, this study was to create a collection of demonstration experiments for the third grade of primary school on the properties of matter. We planned lesson, performed and evaluated the collection of experiments and an educational intervention.
The study is based on descriptive and causal-experimental method. This was a qualitative approach. It was investigated on occasional sample of 36 students. Data were collected with the worksheet, the task of checking predicting skill and with a short semi-structured interview.
The survey showed a lot of learning motivation of pupils with the use of liquid nitrogen in the classroom. Students promoted in "science" predicting skills. The interview has enabled the identification of incorrectly formulated ideas about liquid nitrogen, its properties and its use. Designed collection of experiments enables learning about changing the fragility and strength of materials, changing the volume of the gas at constant pressure when changing temperature, shows the current use of liquid nitrogen in the cooking and illustrate the rapid change in physical state.
